Community ServiceAs a main pillar of the AWCA, philanthropy is an important element within our organization. Over the years we have supported various projects including the Blijf Groep, an organization and shelter system whose objective is to prevent and stop domestic violence; the Leefkringhuis, a grass roots project in North Amsterdam that provides shelter for youth and assistance in various forms to their parents; and De Kloof, a homeless day shelter. As part of a global organization, we participate with other FAWCO (Federation of Women's Clubs Overseas) Clubs to spread awareness and raise funds for the FAWCO Target Program. The newly launched FAWCO Target Program focuses on a sustainable investment supporting women's and girls' education. We welcome our members contributions of time, ideas and energy to the programs and charities our club supports and assistance to the community around us in Amsterdam. |
Family EventsAs Americans and friends of America, it is essential to uphold our family traditions even as we settle far from home. So throughout the club, family events are held for the most commonly celebrated holidays in the U.S. – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Independence Day. Sometimes the events will surprise you – Pie Night instead of dinner on Thanksgiving (it’s a working day after all), or a full-blown Martha Stewart-style Thanksgiving dinner in a stable (with horse!) – you never know! And Independence Day is rarely celebrated on July 4 itself, but Uncle Sam is always there. |
