OV-Chipkaart
To use public transport in the Netherlands, an OV chipcard (Public Transport Card) is essential. It's the most economical and efficient way to access buses, trams, and trains. You can buy an "anonymous" card for 7 euros at places like Albert Heijn or the transportation office near Central Station. Once you have the card, you can reload it at machines around town, such as at Primera and Albert Heijn. Note that these cards expire. Alternatively, you can get a Personal OV Chipcard, which can automatically withdraw funds from your account when the balance is low. Order your Personal OV Chipkaart.
Discount Train Travel
You can purchase a train discount card through NS. This card entitles you and up to three people traveling with you to 40% off the normal fare during off peak hours.
Bikes on Trains
The Netherlands is very bike-friendly, but bringing your bike on the train can be challenging. Trains can be crowded, only certain cars accommodate bikes, not all trains allow bikes, and you need to buy a round-trip ticket for your bike. As an alternative, you can get an annual subscription to the OV-Fiets and pick up a bike at your destination. There are other products and discounts that can be found by visiting http://www.ns.nl/.
